My friend Andy got
this 88 Escort for $16 at a police auction. It is in good shape and we wanted
to swap his ‘87 GT engine, interior, suspension, and GT body parts on it since
his GT is rusting out..
Anyway we decided to try and turbocharge this car (1.9 Hemi CFI 9.0:1) as it is
and see what happens. If it doesn't work out we will just swap his GT engine in
like we planed.
We went to the junkyard and got a T3 off a Dodge charger. 20 bucks!!
When we got home we looked at the CFI exhaust manifold and it looks like if we
chop off the manifold right about at the O2 sensor, weld a plate to that and
drill holes for the turbo it would work well there, the dodge elbow/down pipe
will end up facing right at the stock exhaust!
It will be tight under the alternator though. We'll see...
Now we need to figure out how to hook the turbo to the throttle body being a
CFI car…. Any ideas?
We'll probably just run exhaust flex-pipe with some
radiator hose/clamps to connect the intake to the turbo. Maybe a IC will find
it's way in if I can get a Impulse one or something really cheap/undesirable.
I am planning on punch/chiseling a hole in the oil pan and J.B. welding a bung
on it for the oil drain.
We'll use brake line for the oil pressure line.
Oh, and for added fuel I am going to place an extra injector just before the
throttle body (a cold start injector from a VW rabbit). I'll T it into the fuel
line and have the injector turn on using a pressure switch.
